15th WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE 1983 – HUNGARIAN SCOUTS IN EXILE CONTINGENT. This woven patch was issued by the “Hungarian Scouts in Exile” to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of 1933 WSJ which they hosted. It was also worn at the 1983 WSJ as the Hungarians Scouts In Exile Contingent Patch to the 15th World Scout Jamboree. Very few of these Scouts attended and was quite remarkable that they even existed. The Cold War was raging in 1983: Before WW II, Scouting was very strong in Eastern Europe, even so that Hungry hosted the 4th WSJ in 1933 (they were the third largest Scouting Assoc at that time). When WW II started, he dissolved all Scout units (replacing many with the “Hitler Youth” movement)Most of the Scout Associations moved to unoccupied (by the Nazis) areas (most in London) and became to be known as “Hungarian Scouts in Exile” -“Polish Scouts in Exile”, etc… At the end of the war the countries were liberated but by the USSR, whom outlawed Scouting (behind the Iron Curtain). Today, these Scout Accoc across Eastern Europe are strong and thriving, thanks to those individuals back in the darkest hours of WWII that refused to bend to the oppressive will of dictators.
