Montana, fondly known as “Big Sky Country, ” captivates residents and visitors alike with its natural beauty, lifestyle, and unique character. The state’s historical appeal has drawn artists from the earliest days, from Native American pictographs to renowned paintings by Charles Russell, Edgar Paxson, and Ralph DeCamp. This enduring legacy of fine art contributes to Montana’s distinctive allure. In 2005, coinciding with the Lewis and Clark bicentennial, the Montana Council initiated a patch project to celebrate the event while highlighting Montana’s talented artists. Thus, the Montana Artists Series collectible patch project commenced. Since then, the council has featured the artist series annually, extending through 2025. The series includes a Council Strip, Order of the Arrow flap and bottom, and Jacket patches, fostering collaboration between Montana artists and the Montana Council to support Scouting America in Big Sky Country. Patches are uniquely numbered, either on the front or back. Occasionally, surplus sets become available, or individuals on the distribution list may decline their patches. This particular four-patch set, created by artist Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey, is titled Ovis Canadensis, dated 2020, and numbered 26. All other patches in this series have been distributed.
