In celebration of 90 years of scouts serving on Mackinac Island, the Michigan Crossroads Council has issued a limited edition patch set to commemorate this historic anniversary. A portion of the proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to the Mackinac Island State Park Commission’s Scout Barracks maintenance fund. Scouts began serving as the Governor’s Honor Guard on Mackinac Island in 1929. The vice chairman of the Mackinac Island State Park Commission at that time obtained the state’s approval for eight Eagle Scouts to serve as guides in Fort Mackinac for the summer. Among these first scouts would be future president Gerald R. When the first group of Scouts reached Mackinac Island, they stayed in a barrack at Fort Mackinac. In 1934, as a Civilian Conservation Corps project, the Scout Barracks were built behind the fort. The barracks is still in use as the summer home of seven Boy Scout troops and six Girl Scout troops. Scouts from all Mackinac Island Scout Service Troops in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula are encouraged to participate in this fundraiser. A total of 500 council strips have been produced and 100 six-inch round patches.
